The Church

Grace Greytown is located in the former St. Andrews Church Fordell at 75 Main Street Greytown.

The church was built in 1886 in Fordell, near Whanganui, and is a neoclassical style building constructed out of native timber. The building was relocated to its present site in Greytown on 10th March 2009.

After a lengthy planning process the church was prepared for transportation through the Manawatu Gorge. The church was cut into two pieces above the window line, and after bracing internally, it was transported though the Manawatu Gorge.

The narrow site in Greytown's Heritage Precinct is in close proximity to historic buildings and notable trees. Great care was taken to minimise the risk of damage to these. The two pieces were skillfully craned from the main street, over the neighbouring St. John's hall into position.

The former church has been restored and upgraded for commercial use with minimal alteration to its original fabric.
